Love is a complicated thing – it can be thrilling, a little scary, wonderful, noisy or quiet, kind of intoxicating, tiring and awe-inspiring.
We’ve got all of those things on the world-famous Clifton Hill, in Niagara Falls. In triplicate, or more.
And Valentine’s Day is coming up.
So allow us to walk you through the steps that will lead to a wonderful, thrilling and awe-inspiring time for two in the Honeymoon City.
Let’s start with the perfect love nest (aka a holiday headquarters). This is Clifton Hill – you’ve come to the right place.
On the Hill, there are at least 18 hotels and motels to choose from. Some high-end, some more economical, and plenty in between.
Have you ever heard of heart-shaped tubs? Mirrors on the ceilings? Look ‘em up – this is Niagara Falls, after all.
You want thrills of a different kind on this day of love?
Start with the Nightmares Fear Factory, a haunted house reputedly opened in a genuine haunted house (actually, legend has it that it was a coffin factory).
Too scary? Consider the more traditional, iconic haunts that made this city famous, like Dracula’s Haunted Castle or the House of Frankenstein.
They’ve been spooking people for years, and they’re all right here on Clifton Hill.
Still heart-pounding but not on the scary side, you could go for a spin on the Niagara Skywheel, a massive Ferris wheel that towers over Clifton Hill.
Talk about getting away from it all, just the two of you. From the top, you can see the Horseshoe, Bridal Veil and American falls and clear beyond into the U.S. or, in the other direction, all around Niagara.
In the winter months it offers an especially cool view when there is ice buildup around the top of the falls and on the trees along the Niagara Gorge.
Also heart-pounding in its own way is the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark, near Casino Niagara. Yes, a giant waterpark – we really do have it all here in this city.
Sixteen waterslides, a massive wave pool, hot springs. It’s all right on your doorstep on Clifton Hill.
And would you believe we also have a resident, world-class magician who performs here daily? That’s Greg Frewin, who performs at his own supper club.
The Greg Frewin Theatre is not only a great place for a romantic meal, but a chance to see how the pros do it before you make a little magic of your own later in the night.
And you want to get lucky on Valentine’s Day?
OK, but before you do, stop at Casino Niagara just off Clifton Hill.
It’s the city’s first casino and still a great place for excitement and a good meal, but in a more cozy, inviting setting than the newer, massive Niagara Fallsview Casino, which is also a short distance away.
Excuse us while we wax poetic about the charms of Niagara Falls – hey, speaking of wax, good pre-meal date spots are wax museums.
Check out the Rock Legends Wax Museum or Louis Tussaud’s Wax Museum, both of them on Clifton Hill. It’s amazing what a true artist can do with a little wax and some tools; these creations are truly lifelike.
And a romantic day out can include a little shopping, of course, wandering hand-in-hand along the hill or up top on Victoria Avenue.
There are souvenir shops – this is Niagara Falls, after all – but a lot more too, with a wide selection of jewellers, clothing and plenty of specialty shops.
And if you really want to get crazy, have a gander at this: How about making a miniature version of yourself or someone you know?
On Victoria Avenue there is Allways Antique Photography, where your image can be transformed into a framed picture of a cowboy, gunfighter, saloon girl, pirate, flapper or a gangster in high-quality, antique style.
And now we come to that all-important Valentine’s Day meal.
On Clifton Hill, we have a huge menu of menus to choose from. Here is a small sampling of Top of Clifton Hill restaurants here, just to show you how wide your choices are:
Everything from Taco & Tequila, to Four Brothers Cucina, Afghan Kabob, Casablanca, Jack’s Cantina, New York Restaurant, Outback Steakhouse, Smoke’s Poutinerie, Weinkeller Niagara Falls and Shiv Kirti Chef of India.
We threw those names in just to show you all the international offerings there are here.
But the world-famous brand names are all here, too, as well as small, local favourite. And you can have a wonderful meal for a price that ranges from family-style through to fine dining and everything in between.
As you can see, pretty much everything you can imagine is right here on Clifton Hill. It’s all within easy walking distance … and all within sight of the mighty cataracts themselves.
If there is another place in Canada that offers so much and has something for every taste and budget like we have on Clifton Hill, we haven’t heard of it.
